Jake Quickenden returned to The X Factor UK with something to prove.
The 26-year-old had previously reached Judges’ Houses in 2012, but this time he hoped to take his journey much further.
For his room audition, Jake began with John Legend’s “All of Me.”
He accompanied himself on guitar and gave the emotional ballad a faster, more upbeat interpretation.
But Mel B wasn’t convinced.
She stopped Jake and challenged him to think about what the lyrics actually meant instead of simply performing the song.
The atmosphere in the room suddenly became much more serious.
The judges wanted to hear something genuine.
They asked Jake whether he had experienced heartbreak or a difficult period in his own life.
That’s when the audition took an emotional turn.
Jake revealed that he had lost his younger brother Oliver to cancer after his previous appearance on the show.
The judges encouraged him to put down his guitar and perform something that allowed him to connect with those emotions.
Jake chose “Say Something” by A Great Big World.
This time, there was no upbeat arrangement to hide behind.
It was simply Jake, his voice, and the meaning he brought to the song.
From the opening moments, the difference was clear.
His second performance felt more vulnerable and deeply personal.
The judges who had questioned his first song now watched closely as Jake poured himself into every line.
What had started as an uncertain audition was becoming something completely different.
When the song ended, the judges praised Jake for responding to their criticism and immediately showing another side of himself.
Mel B told him he had given the performance everything he had.
Cheryl praised his ability to accept criticism and come back stronger.
Then came the decision.
Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Cheryl Cole, and Mel B all said yes.
Jake had turned a difficult beginning into four unanimous votes and another opportunity to continue his X Factor journey.
It wasn’t simply his voice that changed the room.
It was what happened when he stopped trying to impress everyone and allowed the emotion behind the song to take over.
Sometimes an audition doesn’t begin perfectly.
